2015 Fall Sports Preview: Groton-Dunstable Crusaders Boys’ Soccer

G-D boys’ soccer head coach Sean Wisbey was kind enough to give LSP the following profile on his 2015 squad:
Season at G-D: “This is my sixth season at G-D but 12th as varsity coach, record at G-D 73-20-11”
2014 results: 13-5-2 (8-1-1 Mid-Wach B). lost in D1 Central quarterfinals to Westborough 4-2 on PKs.

Captains: Jason Dingle, Patrick Keating, and third to be named before the start of regular season.
Returning starters: Seniors Jason Dingle, Matt Krikorian, Mitchell Wheeler, Patrick Keating, Eric Niemoller, junior Dean Tornaritis

Biggest Games: Thursday, September 17th vs. Westboro 4 p.m., Saturday, September 26th vs. Sutton, 11 a.m.; Saturday, October 17th vs. Bromfield, 11 a.m.
Strengths: Experience and Organization
Room for improvements: Speed of play
Team goals: Wisbey: “The goal for the program will always be to take the next step as a program which for us will be reaching the Div 1 Central Mass. district championship game for the first time in school history. We lost to Wachusett on penalty kicks in the semifinals in 2013 after leading the game with less than a minute to go.”
“Additionally, [we want] to reclaim Mid-Wach B league title. Last season Westborough traveled to G-D for both team’s final regular season matches with the league title on the line. We just needed a draw to win the league and led 1-0 with 10 minutes remaining when Westborough struck twice with game winner at 1:17 remaining. We watched the Rangers run out of town with the League Cup last season and it’s something that will motivate them well this season.”
“The 2015 teams will return 16-18 players from 2014 squad. Despite have 6 returning starters the team lost key central players to graduation. With key spots up for grabs among those starters it will be interesting to see who fills what roles and what new players will find the starting lineup early on. I expect a great battle for starting keeper among three different players including seniorChris Werner, junior Nicholas Recsa, and sophomore Mitchell Hardy.”
Other comments: Wisbey: “On Monday, August 31st, G-D will be hosting Royal Grammar School from Newcastle, England for a 12:00pm scrimmage!”
“The 2015 Crusader Soccer Jamboree will be hosted at G-D on Saturday, September 5th from 8am-2pm. The opening game will be Tuesday, Sept 8th at home vs. Shepherd Hill at 4 p.m.”
“Groton-Dunstable boys’ soccer started at the high school in 1972 and is currently seven wins short of 500 in program history. This season the boys will try to claim their mark in history by winning the program’s 500th game.”
