The Cushing Penguins defeated the Lawrence Spartans 3-1 at Lawrence Academy Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the 41st Annual Groton School/Lawrence Academy Holiday Hockey Tournament.
Bailey Conger opened the scoring for Cushing in the first period off an assist from David Cotton. It was the 15th point of the season for each of them on the season, tying them with linemate Jake Simons for the team lead.
After a scoreless second period, the Spartans tied it up early in the third as Timothy Kent and Craig Needham went two-on-one with Cushing goalie Joey Daccord. Kent went to his right to find Needham, who buried it top shelf to send the home crowd into a frenzy.
Midway through the third period, Cushing reclaimed the lead for good as Max Hegge unloaded a bomb from the slot to beat Lawrence netminder Michael Robinson to make the score 2-1.
The Spartans pulled Robinson with one minute to play, but unlike Cushing’s offense for much of the game, they could not get a quality possession going, and Cotton sealed the deal with one second left by scoring an empty-net goal.
Cushing improved to 7-1-1, while Lawrence fell to 1-1-1.
